How to get readers on your website

It is relatively easy to find readers by your side. This means writing so that you:

  • Put the reader first
  • Address the reader as ‘you’, and
  • Use gender-neutral language
  • Put the reader first

The difference between mediocre writers and good writers is that medieval writers start with the subject, while good writers start with the reader.

Think about what your readers are interested in, not what you are interested in.

The more your readers want or need to know about a topic ... how it relates to their problems and concerns ... the more interested they will be.

To do this, your readers must understand three things:

Who are they?

And how much they already know about the proposed subject

How they will benefit by learning more about this

Don't assume that everyone knows the basics of what you're writing ... Your article should be communicated to both experienced and inexperienced readers alike.

Before sitting down to write an article, report or paper on a technical topic, you need to get a rough answer to these questions:

  • My readers are technical people?
  • What do they already know about the subject?
  • What do they want and need to know about the subject?
  • How important is the matter to them in their work or private life?
  • What do I want them to think, believe or do after reading my article?
  • How will they benefit from my article?

Most of these questions can be answered by common sense, which you need using common sense. However, if you are writing more important material, you probably need to do a reader survey.

Enter the second person

Writing a second person means addressing the reader as 'you'. By addressing the reader directly you are putting him or her first.

Using ‘you’ engages the reader in a way that the third person (he, she or it) never uses.

Consider the third person's sentence ... "The power gord volume can be easily controlled by the guitar player by using the foot pedal".

If you write to him directly or directly to him, you can further engage the reader ... "You can easily control the size of the power cord using the foot pedals".

As advertisers know, 'you' is one of the two most inspiring words in English. (The other is 'free'.)

People take care of themselves first ... you, your project, technology or whatever is second to none.

So, when you use ‘you’ you are talking about what is most important to the readers and it attracts their attention.

Gender-neutral language

Using words like gender postman (i.e. ... finally ... people) is a sure-fire way to touch and get out of the old fashion.

Also, you run the risk of isolating your readers, especially female readers, some of whom may be nicely involved in gender-related issues.

Rich vocabulary for a speaker in the English language means it is almost easily found.

For example, you could use the words 'police officer', 'meteorologist' for meteorologists and more.

Getting rid of the ‘man’ suffix in this way makes your writing more inclusive and incidentally more accurate ... Many traditions have traditionally taken over the male profession now by women.

Another way to get out of using gender-biased language is to switch from singular to plural.

Instead of "the owner must have his car serviced once a year" you can write "owners must have their cars serviced once a year".

If that doesn’t work, try using ‘he or she’ or ‘him and her’ instead of liking one gender more than the other.

Or use 'stars' as a single gender-neutral pronoun ... This is perfectly understandable and really now allowed under the style guides of many international newspapers and other publications.

Inspire the reader with convenience

It is very difficult to persevere in reading job manuals such as job manuals as well as technical documents, even if it is very necessary beyond what the reader is supposed to do.

The trick is to tell the reader the benefits of the work ahead so that he is motivated to read attentively. If you are writing a manual, summarize what he will learn and why he needs to understand it.
